In 2014, USAID/Tanzania awarded the Tanzania Strengthening Police and Prison Comprehensive HIV Services (SPPCHS) project as an initiative under the AIDSFree project. The SPPCHS project worked with the Ministry of Home Affairs to design a peer education program for prisons to provide knowledge, skills, and tools to prevent and respond to tuberculosis (TB) and HIV in prisons.
One in three women worldwide has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused at least once in her lifetime. And women who have experienced gender-based violence (GBV) can face up to three times greater risk for HIV compared to those who have not, according to UNAIDS. GBV is common, affecting both women and men. Children and key populations are also at high risk, and often don’t have access to the resources they need.
As we work toward ending the global HIV epidemic by the year 2030, optimizing the health workforce has never been more important. PEPFAR 3.0 directs investment to target regions and services to achieve epidemic control. Yet, as countries strive to achieve more with less, what activities and approaches will best support and enable increased utilization of the existing health workforce to deliver and sustain quality HIV/AIDS services?
In 2001, UNAIDS was mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to support countries in monitoring progress in the Global AIDS Response and to report back on progress to the General Assembly. Progress has been measured against a set of 2010 and 2015 targets, based on a global monitoring framework which draws on a global indicator set.
EnCompass serves in Gender and Quality Improvement advisor roles for the AIDSFree project, which aims to improve the effectiveness of high-impact, evidence-based HIV interventions, and accelerate the speed with which these interventions are brought to scale at the country-level. EnCompass provides capacity development and technical support to USAID missions, host-country governments, and HIV/AIDS implementers as a subcontractor to John Snow, Inc.
As an extension of a multi-year global learning program to augment the World Bank’s HIV in the Workplace efforts, EnCompass developed a six-module e-learning solution that served as a resource for HIV advocates trained in face-to-face workshops by EnCompass, and as orientation and training for those HIV advocates new to this role. The highly participatory and dynamic course covers topics including the role of the HIV/AIDS Task Team Leader, care and support for people living with HIV, stigma, and discrimination.
EnCompass, as a subcontractor to John Snow International, was responsible for policy, quality improvement, and development of e-learning packages in support of the AIDSTAR Program, a USAID mechanism to implement the US Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
Through USAID/ASSIST, EnCompass helped build the capacity of host-country service delivery organizations in USAID-assisted countries to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, client-centeredness, safety, accessibility, and equity of the health and family services they provide. USAID/ASSIST seeks to ensure the sustainability of these improvements by developing competencies and engaging with host-country governments at the policy level.
