This Friday, August 21, 2020, Dr. Pat Morris will participate as a keynote speaker and panel moderator during a virtual event featuring women peacemakers in South Sudan, “Ending the Cycle of Violence: Support for Women’s Civil Society Organizations.” Dr. Morris, EnCompass’ Director of Gender and Inclusive Development, joins a group of distinguished keynote speakers and women peacemakers from South Sudan, Pakistan, Israel, and the United States. She will speak about ending the cycle of violence and how to build and strengthen partnerships to address violence against women. She will then moderate the South Sudan Women Peacemakers’ panel discussion.

The South Sudan Women Peacemakers group, formed in 2019/2020, includes women’s civil society organizations who seek to identify funding gaps and share their perspectives. Women civil society organizations face many challenges; this panel aims to discuss funding issues and solicit a way forward.

Other keynote speakers during Friday’s virtual event include Hon. Aya Benjamin Warille, South Sudan’s Minister of Gender, Child and Social Development; Dr. Mary Ellsberg, Executive and Founding Director of the Global Women’s Institute at the George Washington University; and Dr. Andrew Blum, Executive Director of the Institute for Peace and Justice, Professor of Practice.

The South Sudan Women’s Empowerment Network, in partnership with The George Washington University’s Global Women’s Institute and the University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, has organized the event to bring together these outstanding women peacemakers, as well as international peace funders and institutions that are working on women’s peace and security.

The virtual event begins at 9 a.m. this Friday. Dr. Morris will speak at 9:45 a.m., with the panel discussion following. Registration is free via this Google form.
