EnCompass is pleased to endorse the 2018 Gender 360 Summit outcomes document, following our engagement in the summit as a sponsor. This year’s summit, on Positive Girl and Boy Development, highlighted the gendered experiences of youth of diverse gender identities across the globe. These experiences and identities have an impact on girls’ and boys’ empowerment and education, young people’s economic empowerment and equality, adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response, and the transformation of gender norms that affect young people of diverse gender identities and sexualities.
EnCompass team members presented on panels and delivered “lightning talks” during the summit in June. We also co-facilitated the post-summit outcomes workshop with other sponsors and partners. The resulting document, A Gendered Approach to Positive Girl and Boy Development: Key Outcomes and Recommendations of the 2018 Gender 360 Summit, outlines five recommendations for the positive development of girls, boys, and youth of diverse gender identities and the intersections of education, health, economic empowerment, and GBV prevention and response. EnCompass is one of 18 organizations that have endorsed this document.
Lyn Messner, EnCompass’ Director of Gender and Inclusive Development, reflected on the importance of collective action for inclusive development: “The recommendations in this document incorporate actions and solutions for all of us in the development community to drive positive change for young people, inclusive of sex and gender identity.”
To bring awareness to the recommendations, EnCompass will publish a series of blog posts reflecting on our shared responsibility for positive boy and girl development. Look for the first post in October.
