Heran presenting to an audience

As we approach the 2018 Gender 360 Summit on June 11, which EnCompass is co-sponsoring, several of our staff will present on our work related to “Positive Girl and Boy Development,” the summit’s theme. To kick off this three-part series, we talked with Heran Tadesse, EnCompass’ Senior Gender Advisor in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

EnCompass conducted the midterm evaluation of USC Canada’s Seeds of Survival program. USC Canada promotes vibrant family farms, strong rural communities, and healthy ecosystems around the world, by focusing on activities that build food and livelihood security for small-scale farmers, and preserve the agricultural biodiversity necessary to feeding a growing and changing planet. Its core program, Seeds of Survival, works in partnerships with farming communities in 12 countries around the world.

Ethiopian Mother, Father, and Baby

The United States celebrates Fathers’ Day on the third Sunday each June, commemorating the contributions of fathers and father figures in children’s lives. Many men recognize the importance of being engaged and responsible fathers, but they are limited by gender norms and responsibilities that define caregiving and unpaid care work as primarily female activities.

EnCompass serves as gender advisor in a consortium, led by Pathfinder International, implementing USAID’s Transform: Primary Health Care project in Ethiopia. The consortium will work with USAID/Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health to advance gender equality and end preventable child and maternal deaths in four of the most populous regions in Ethiopia. EnCompass also provides assistance in capacity building and quality improvement initiatives in this role.
